School Type

Description

Nursery Schools

Otherwise known as kindergarten, this is pre-primary non-compulsory education.

Infant Schools

These are for KS1 pupils, with Reception classes for 4-5 year olds (a pre-school environment covering the foundation stage) and Infant classes for 5-7 year olds (Years 1-2). Many Infant schools also have a Nursery class

Junior Schools

These cater for KS2 pupils from 7-11 years old (Years 3-6)

Primary Schools

Combining Infant, Junior and often Nursery classes within the one school

Secondary Schools

These cater for KS3/4 pupils, 11-16 year olds (non-compulsory to 18 years old). This consists of Years 7-13.

Colleges of Further Education

Catering for 16-18 year olds post-compulsory education.

Special Schools

For the education of children with various learning difficulties
